Today’s Gospel is the parable of the Good Samaritan who cares for others, no matter what. I have boundless opportunities to love my neighbor as myself. There’s not enough time in the day to reach out to all those who could use my help or companionship. Yet, each day, I try to touch lives, knowing that it will never be enough.
I’ve spent time with friends and family members who were dying. Each knew the key to life. They had it figured out with clarity. All the money in the world isn’t important. A great career wasn’t important. Being the best on a team wasn’t important. College Degrees weren’t important. No. Precious moments were important. Simplicity. Time. Good health.
Their regrets were not having done things that really mattered in the big picture of life. Life’s busyness kept them from spending quality time with family and friends or volunteering to “help their neighbors.” It was easier to give money than time and attention. Yet, they knew that you can’t put a price tag on the precious moments in life.
God offers us gifts of opportunity to reach out and touch lives. Yet, often our preoccupation with “stuff” gets in the way. Serving others changes lives in a good way. I know I can’t save the world, but who I am and what I’ve become is my gift of loving God in return. God gave me the gift to respond to opportunities to touch lives. It’s a gift that enriches me and helps me to be who God wants me to be. I pray that you enjoy your precious moments as they unfold.
