Dear Parishioners,
Last week my second daughter graduated from high school. It was very emotional for me but a very exciting time for her. In September, she will be going off to college. Not far, but still away. All the nerves and anxiety of another one leaving the nest will come flooding back in August when we get ready to say good-bye. I will pray she is safe, that she makes good choices, follows the valuable advice we have given her and that every step of the way, Jesus is along for the journey.
Today’s Gospel is all about the journey…the journey to follow Jesus no matter what. Luke tells us about the ones who decided they wanted to follow Jesus and proclaim the Kingdom of God. However they were emphatically rejected by Jesus when they claimed they first had to take care of “other business”. Some have interpreted Jesus’ response as saying; discipleship is not a second job or a hobby. It is not meant to be taken lightly or for only a few. To proclaim the Kingdom of God is a responsibility of all disciples.
It is because Jesus is central to God’s ruling activity that discipleship in following Him is such a priority. To preach the Kingdom is to preach the benefits that God has made available because Jesus Christ has come.
Do we make Jesus a priority? Do we follow Jesus completely? Do we have excuses? Trust in God and keep marching on to the task at hand.
