Three people came from very far to see Jesus. They are traditionally called kings; they are more often called wise men. They were obviously seekers, and that, according to many reliable sources is the beginning of wisdom.
They saw a star! They not only saw that star, they saw a message in it. They saw the star as a sign, and that means that they were not only living in the present world around them. They believed in a beyond, a world behind this world a world different from this world.
Those three saw that star as a big question mark. It invited them somewhere and they followed it. Why? They must have had some hope or some expectation that something new was going to happen to this world. When they followed the star, they were not looking for a learned book or a political system that might bring liberation to all. What they were looking for was a person. They were looking for a child.
If we think about it, we are in the same position. We are looking for several things. We are suffering under a guilty conscience, feeling dishonest, unfair, forgetful, stubborn. We are looking for a new life for another possibility for a greater integrity. To be able to find all that, we do not need a system, a moral code, a theory. We need a person. We need the Christ Child…Jesus.
