In this week’s Gospel, there are two things going on here. The miracle of Jesus walking on water which of course, a remarkable event we have heard many times and through our faith, we believe. But let’s not overlook the other incredible thing. Peter’s fear when Jesus commands him to do the same, even at Peter’s request. Instead of waiting for Jesus to continue to walk towards the boat, Peter wants to join Him on the water. However, soon after, when the wind starts to blow, Peter loses his faith as he focuses more on the turned-up wind speed than on Jesus and then he begins to sink. Until Jesus reaches out his hand to save him.
So, is this fear valid? Could it be more about expectations we put on ourselves or intentions others put on us?
My 3 children will soon all begin new chapters in their lives…new schools and new jobs. I am sure there is much fear there! What will others expect of them? Will they be happy, nervous, successful? Will they live up to the intentions of their teachers, bosses, family?
So, what about people who fear that they can’t meet the expectations for trusting and living as God would want them to? I don’t think it’s a matter of fear or faith. Sometimes the two work together. Having faith can get us through our fears. But never let fear hinder you from moving forward towards whatever you want in life. And like Peter, it’s ok to ask for help. Jesus will stretch out his hand to you too.
Peace,
